How Haile Wilson Booked 26 Weddings in 4 Months, Even After a Scam Wiped Out His Savings

Haile is a St. Louis wedding photographer whose creative style stands out. He had been relying on Thumbtack and WeddingWire for leads. After joining The Icon Agency, he raised his prices and started booking weddings in Chicago. He also bounced back from a setback that emptied his bank account.

Haile's Background and Unique Creative Style (00:00)

Peter: Today I'm joined by Haile Wilson, an incredible photographer based in Missouri. Haile, give us a quick intro.

Haile: I've been shooting photography for about six years and weddings full-time for about four. It's always been my passion, and doing this has been the best decision I've ever made.

Peter: What stood out to me when we first connected was how unorthodox your style is. How did you develop it?

Haile: It started with portraits. When you first pick up a camera, you ask friends to let you photograph them, and your creative mind starts going to different places. What if I add a color? What if I light it this way? That drive to create something I hadn't seen anyone else do shaped my style.

Peter: People say the wedding industry is saturated, but a unique style really sets you apart. We built that into your marketing, and it's a big factor in your results.

The Real Problem: Hitting a Ceiling with Thumbtack and WeddingWire (02:47)

Haile: I was using sites like Thumbtack and WeddingWire to get leads, and they weren't getting the results I wanted. All I'd ever done on Instagram was boost posts. I'm more on the creative side, and I didn't have the business and marketing side figured out.

Peter: Why not just keep using those sites?

Haile: There's a ceiling with them. I didn't want a cap. I wanted to get to the point where I'm turning down leads, not scraping them together.

The Result: 26 Weddings Booked in Four Months (05:27)

Haile: My Instagram has grown steadily since we started, with quality followers who didn't know who I was before and now want to hire me. The community has also been huge. Everyone asks questions, everyone answers them, and you know you're not going through this alone. Portrait clients have even found me through the wedding ads, so it's cross-pollinating, and every side of my business has grown.

Peter: You're averaging 80 to 100 new Instagram followers a month. These aren't random followers. They're people who are engaged, planning a wedding, and looking for vendors. How many weddings have you booked since we started?

Haile: Around 26 weddings across 2024, 2025, and 2026.

Peter: Twenty-six weddings in four months. That's seriously epic.

Doubling His Prices in St. Louis (09:30)

Haile: St. Louis isn't an expensive market like Chicago or LA. I was priced about average for my area, and you told me I should raise my prices based on the quality of my work. I was super scared to, but I did it, and I'm now making almost double or triple what I used to per wedding. It's been the best season I've ever had.

Booking Chicago Clients from St. Louis (12:13)

Peter: We've also been running ads outside your local market, and you're booking in Chicago. How do you handle couples who'd rather hire someone local?

Haile: Chicago is only about four hours away, so I position myself as a Midwest photographer. When they ask, I say, "I travel. I'm not just a St. Louis photographer. I'll be anywhere you need me to be to capture your vows and your first kiss."

I'm upfront about the travel fee when they ask, but I don't lead with it. Nobody has balked, because I can drive there, and my prices are St. Louis prices. Chicago couples look at me like I'm a god, because photographers there are charging $10K.

Bouncing Back After His Bank Account Hit Zero (15:23)

Peter: It hasn't been easy for you. First there were bank issues that delayed your ads for a couple of weeks. Then, about two months ago, you got hit by a scam that was a huge financial blow. A lot of people would have hung it up, but you didn't.

Haile: When you see your bank account go to zero, it's crushing in the moment. But you take some time, breathe, and tell yourself, "If I'm confident in myself, I should be able to come back from this." Money comes and goes. When you're scrambling at 7 a.m. trying to figure everything out, it's humbling, but it's also motivating, because it can't get worse than this. I chose to stay positive and keep moving forward, because dwelling on it won't make it any better.

Peter: Practically, what do you do in that moment?

Haile: I do what I was already doing, but at a much higher level. If I used to follow up with a lead once or twice, now I'm sending another message. I had to secure those leads, because a deposit was literally going to save me. I didn't leave my computer until I'd secured two or three leads.

Peter: It's humbling to realize that most of us could work that hard if we needed to, yet we choose not to. If you need to grow your business, use that sense of urgency. Massive action works.

Projecting $150K–$200K for 2025 (20:53)

Haile: I have 21 weddings booked for 2025 so far, which is about $87,000 to $90,000 already. I'd love to get to 50 weddings this year.

Peter: If you book four or five weddings a month through July, you're there. Fifty weddings would put you at $150K, maybe closer to $200K. You did $75K last year.

Haile: I'm very confident. I have two discovery calls right after this. Bookings have been way more consistent than ever. My website views have skyrocketed, because people follow me on Instagram and then go to my website. They have so many touchpoints that they feel like they have to book.

Peter: People want more leads from their website, but a website doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's like a billboard on a highway with no traffic. We drive people to your Instagram, they visit your website and inquire, and then you get them on the phone.

Growing the Team: Video and Associates (24:39)

Haile: I recently brought on a videographer, so we're now booking photo and video. When we started, it was photo only. Once I hit my number for my own weddings, around 45, I want to hire another photographer so we can cover more weddings on the same day. I'm only 28, so I can shoot a lot of weddings, but once popular dates start piling up, I'll need someone who delivers the same quality my clients expect. I'd also love to travel to other destinations.

Three Biggest Lessons from the Last Four Months (28:14)

Haile: First, verify every client and make sure they are who they say they are. Just because someone wants to give you money doesn't mean they have your best interests at heart. I learned that the hard way.

Second, ask questions. I learned so much by speaking up in the meetings. If I'd been a wallflower, I wouldn't have learned nearly as much.

Third, be persistent. Couples want someone who will make the effort to talk to them. Maybe they missed your text. Once I started double and triple texting, they'd think, "Oh, he's serious. Let's start this conversation up again."

Peter: Everybody wants the $10,000 clients, but those people have options. You don't find those clients. You earn them.

Haile: I ran track in college, which is an individual sport. It's just you in the blocks, and nobody is coming to save you. You have to put in all your effort.

His Advice for Photographers on the Fence (32:54)

Peter: What's been the most transformational part of working together?

Haile: The community, and all the information you share. Before, I had a small view of what was possible. Once I went to the meetings and talked to everybody, I realized this could go so much bigger.

Peter: Sometimes it takes someone else seeing it in you before you can see it in yourself. What would you say to someone on the fence about joining us?

Haile: Always invest in yourself. If you can get the money together, do it. This is a huge investment in yourself, for the information, the community, and the growth. As long as you're willing to put in the work, you will see growth. I guarantee it.

Haile Wilson is a wedding and portrait photographer based in St. Louis, Missouri. He's been taking photos for about six years and shooting weddings full time for about four. His style is unusual. He plays with color and light in ways most wedding photographers don't. But his leads came from Thumbtack, WeddingWire and boosted posts, and he felt those sites put a cap on how much he could grow.

Relying on directory sites for leads?

We run the Instagram ads and teach you the booking process Haile used, so there's no ceiling on how many couples you can reach.

He joined The Icon Agency at the end of August 2024. Four months later, he had booked about 26 weddings across 2024, 2025 and 2026. He had also raised his prices to two or three times what he charged before, started booking couples in Chicago, and added video to his services. He did all of this despite payment problems that delayed his ads and a scam that drained his bank account.

In this interview, Haile explains how he books couples four hours away, what he does when his back is against the wall, and the three lessons he'd pass on to other photographers.

No ceiling on leads

Haile's creative style came from years of shooting portraits and experimenting with color, light and composition. That style made him stand out in a crowded industry. The problem was finding enough couples to see it.

He'd been getting leads from wedding directories like Thumbtack and WeddingWire, and occasionally boosting an Instagram post. Then he saw an Icon Agency ad in a Facebook group about building an Instagram funnel.

"I feel like there was a cap with that. I don't want a cap. I want to get to a point where I'm turning down leads." — Haile Wilson, Haile Wilson Photography

He knew he was strong on the creative side. What he needed was the business side: how ads work, and how to turn someone who sees an ad into a booked couple.

26 weddings and a big price increase

Once his ads were running, engaged couples started following Haile on Instagram, going to his website and inquiring. Some who came for weddings also booked portraits and studio sessions.

Here's what changed in his first four months:

  • About 26 weddings booked across 2024, 2025 and 2026

  • 21 weddings booked for 2025 as of early January

  • About $90,000 already booked for 2025, compared with about $75,000 in revenue for all of 2024

  • 80 to 100 new Instagram followers a month, all engaged couples in his target markets

  • A big increase in visits to his website

  • New bookings in Chicago, about four hours from home

  • Video added to his services, with a videographer on his team

Haile had priced himself around average for St. Louis. After a push from the team, he raised his prices. He was nervous about it, but it led to his best season yet.

"I was super scared to. I ended up doing it, and I've been almost doubling, tripling what I used to make off of weddings. It's been the best season I've ever had." — Haile Wilson

Booking Chicago from St. Louis

The Icon Agency also ran ads for Haile in Chicago. When couples ask why they should hire a photographer from St. Louis, he tells them he works across the Midwest and will travel anywhere for their wedding.

He's upfront about travel fees and explains them whenever couples ask. So far, nobody has pushed back. Chicago is close enough to drive, and his St. Louis pricing is well below what couples are quoted there.

"When I talk to people in Chicago, they're like, 'Wait, your photos look like this and you charge this much? Photographers here charge 10 grand.'" — Haile Wilson

When the bank account hits zero

Haile's first few months weren't easy. When he started, a problem between his bank and Meta blocked his ad payments for a couple of weeks. Then, a couple of months later, he was scammed, and his bank account and savings went to zero.

"When you literally see your bank account go to zero, it's very crushing in the moment. But then you take some time, you breathe. If I can't come back from this, then I might not be as strong as I think I am." — Haile Wilson

He didn't change his process. He did everything faster and more often:

  1. Follow up again, and again. If a lead didn't reply, he sent a second message, then a third.

  2. Treat every lead as the one that matters. He focused on getting each couple to his website, onto a call and to a signed contract.

  3. Stay at the computer until the bookings come in. He didn't step away until he had secured two or three leads.

"I didn't leave my computer until I secured two or three leads. It had to happen." — Haile Wilson

Ready to fill your calendar?

In September 2025, Katrina had one wedding booked for 2026. By mid-December, her year was almost full, and couples were already asking about 2027 and 2028. If your inquiries have slowed or Instagram isn't bringing in couples anymore, let's look at where your studio is now and whether the program is the right fit.

Katrina's advice for other photographers

If you're on the fence: "Just do it. You will not regret it." Katrina calls herself "a lifer" and has offered to talk with any photographer who wants to hear about her experience firsthand.

If you're struggling with sales: "Get on the phone." A call lets you and the couple both check that you're the right fit, and it gets easier the more you do it.

If you hit a slow week: "Just stick with it." Some weeks she books three weddings. Other weeks she has five consultations and nobody books. Peter's advice is to track your numbers, not your feelings. A 30% close rate is great, and 50% is awesome.

Key Takeaways

  • Talking to more couples is often the missing piece. Many photographers who are struggling only speak with one or two couples a month.

  • Paid ads can replace constant posting as your source of leads.

  • Book consultations quickly and send reminders to prevent no-shows.

  • A pay-in-full discount can bring in cash early without discounting every booking.

  • Judge your progress by your numbers, not by one slow week.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do wedding photographers need to post on social media every day to get bookings?

No. Katrina hardly posts at all. Paid ads bring in the inquiries, and occasional Instagram posts (once or twice a week) help new leads get to know the studio. Social media works as a nurture tool, not the main lead source.

How many consultation calls does it take to book out a wedding calendar?

Katrina averages about five consultations a week, spending two to three hours a day on messaging, follow-ups, and calls. Many photographers who struggle to book are only talking to one or two couples a month.

What if I tried Facebook ads before and they didn't work?

Katrina had the same experience. She boosted posts on her own and later paid another company, with no results either time. The difference this time was a full system: targeted ads, fast follow-up, reminders that brought no-shows to zero, and training on how to run consultation calls.

How quickly can a wedding photographer see results from ads?

Every studio is different. For Katrina, inquiries started coming in as soon as the ads went live, and she spoke with more leads in her first month than in the rest of the year.

Should wedding photographers offer a pay-in-full discount?

It can help. Katrina had never offered one in 15 years. After adding a small discount for couples who pay in full, many took it, which brought in larger payments up front.

How do you reduce no-shows on wedding consultation calls?

Book the consultation soon after the first conversation, while the couple is still excited, and always send reminders beforehand. Katrina has had zero no-shows since following this process.
